So in this project I went about it slightly differently and started by looking at the body first.
I started by blocking out the body...
(blocked out body)
...and merging the each part/segment together.
At this point I wasn't happy with doing things differently and went back to crafting the head first.
I imported the image plane for the front and side...
...and set about trying to get this thing made. I started by trying to carve it out from a pre-made shape.
That didn't go to well so I blocked it out with pre-made polygons with the intention of merging them together at a later point.
This too didn't work so I returned to the draw polygon tool...
...And drew the mouth and jaw section - quite successfully too I might add.
Progress!
(From here on the image planes have been disabled for the screenshots so you can just see the model)
I continued on up past the eyebrows (replacing the cylinder with the draw polygon tool again.)
Different angle, closer up.
Front on shot. At this point I made his expression more expressive.
Any good lion needs a mane. Here his one began to grow. I started with the centre 'strand' - created with the draw polygon tool again. Each extra strand was duplicated repositioned and resized.
From the back.
At this point his hearing aid arrived...
...and here he can hear.
Here beneath the hair he can hear very well.
Another angle.
Now his skull started to grow and take form.
Another angle showing the left half is now complete.
Le lions mane is now fully formed.
Closer up view from the front.
I pulled his hair back and completed the other side of his face (by mirroring).
I generously gave him his hair back.
I cleaned up his hair overlap that happened around the ears.
Here's his other side.
Whiskers!
Now, back to the body.
I decided to wipe the slate clean with the body and start over.
I traced out the body shape with polygon tool again.
At this stage I made a separate foot and merged it onto the body. you can see the foot on the right checking the sizing is correct.
Just checking out the body shape (with feet) when I mirror it.
And here are is one of his feelers. (hands)
"Hand attached sir!" (albeit with slightly wrong topology - oops)
Between the last screen and now I crafted a wing and attached it.
Here begins the edge looping correction process - What a mind hurdle!
The other side.
His knee 'post-looping'.
Easier to see with the faces selected.
Same thing here with the elbow.
The final body shape. (With edge loop reference in the background)
My attempted re-looping of the jaw and skull area.
Headus-ing the Nigel.
So, some weight painting needs to happen obviously.
I needed to redo the setup machine phase - lucky as I hadn't recorded it.
Another screeny of this stage.
Now it is texture time. (The Aardman bead eyes sadly did not suit an aged copper statue)
Nigel went through various texture iterations. Creepy eyes there Nigel. Please change them.
And here is the finished Nigel pre-render.
